Over the coming weeks primary 1,4, and 7 will be completing the online Scottish National Standardised Assessments.
What does this mean for your child?
Children do not have to revise or prepare for assessments. The assessments are used as part of routine teaching and learning to help teachers understand how well your child is progressing and to plan next steps.
The system is designed so that if a child is experiencing difficulty, the questions will get easier, and if a child is doing well, the questions will become more challenging. In this way, the assessments establish children’s capacity without them having to face lots of questions that are too easy or too hard for them to answer. There is no pass or fail.
The assessments are as short as possible and are age and stage appropriate. There is no time limit. This is to ensure children do not feel unnecessary time pressure when undertaking the assessments. We do expect, however, that the majority of children will complete each assessment in no more than 45 minutes. Your child will not be expected to take assessments covering reading, writing, and numeracy in one sitting.

A very warm welcome back to school everyone. We hope you enjoyed your summer break and weren’t too disappointed with the weather!
We welcome Ms Sharon McGhee to the school as Acting Head Teacher and Ms Elaine Duffy as our Outreach Worker assistant. We hope they enjoy their time with us.
Our new P1 pupils have started today and seem to have settled in to their new classes very well. The rest of the school have enjoyed their first day back and all the staff are looking forward to working alongside them this year.
Our most recent newsletter, in which you will find lots of our most recent news and information is now available under the “Newletters” tab. If you have any questions, then please contact us at the school.
Today we relaunched our school library. We have had a lot of help and support in making it a place that we all want to spend time in, and we would like to thank everyone who helped make that happen. Our P6 pupils, the Golden Eagles, talked about some of their favourite authors and books at the relaunch and entertained our guests with some songs as well. Everyone is now looking forward to making full use of it after the summer holidays.
On Friday last week, all our pupils who have earned 150 house vouchers were special guests of our hosts, Aegon, at the annual Golden Club party. The slideshow below will give you a little flavour of how things went.
Our congratulations go to Sarah (P3-The Red Deer) and Lethee (P6-The Golden Eagles), our two most recent recipients of the Colinton Cup. Lethee was awarded the cup for being the pupil who shows great initiative in the school, while Sarah was awarded the cup for being a cooperative learner. Well done to both girls.
In other news, we were really disappointed at the postponement of our Sports Day last Thursday due to bad weather. All the children really enjoyed Health Week and Sports Day would have rounded the week off perfectly. However, the event has been rescheduled for Thursday 11 June and, once again, we hope the weather holds and that we see as many parents there as possible to cheer the children on.
We all enjoyed hosting our Health Week display in the gym hall last week. Although all the classes were working with the same theme, many parents commented on just how differently they had approached it.
Our transition arrangements are well underway. P7 pupils are beginning to get ready for their three day visit to their High School, and our nursery children have been enjoying the opportunity to explore the P1 evironment in the “Big School.”
The school will be a very busy place over the next few weeks but, as always, you are very welcome to speak to anyone about any queries or concerns you may have.
